Rajmachi is a small village situated in the Sahyadri mountain range of the Konkan region of Maharashtra. Rajmachi has two fortified peaks – Shrivardhan and Manaranjan forts, located near two famous hills of Lonavala and Khandala.
At the base of the fort is the village Udhewadi which is another name for Rajmachi. The fort of Rajmachi is famous among trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. If you want to experience a fully fledged trek, you can start from the Kondhane caves which will take 3-4 hours of climbing, but otherwise, you can drive right up to Udhewadi village from the Lonavala, and then trek for hardly 20-30 minutes to the top of the fort. This 15 km. route from Lonavala to Udhewadi is extremely bad and we would recommend you take this route on an SUV or a car with high ground clearance. This 15 Km route is one of the best routs for off-roaders. Bikers are trying their riding skills on this route.
The simple and clearly marked trail on both the paths make Rajmachi a very popular beginner’s trek.
However, in the last few years, some inhabitants in Udhewadi have started renting out their rooms to travelers. The rooms are extremely basic but the overall experience of staying overnight at the top is quite amazing. Rates are in the range of 1000-1500 per room for a night. Some people arrange tent stay for travellers. If you want to camp overnight, Rajmachi fort is a great option – you can easily carry your own tent, find a suitable camping ground and pitch it for staying overnight. The top of the forts are extremely windy in almost all seasons so it might be difficult to camp there, but you can definitely do that at Udhewadi.
